Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are already a mainstay in the passenger car market and have made significant progress in other road vehicles like vans, trucks, and buses. Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) have struggled to make anywhere near as much progress in any of these markets due to the higher up front cost of the vehicles and the lack of low cost green hydrogen infrastructure. Despite the challenges, IDTechEx believes there are still opportunities for FCEVs to meet the needs of certain drive cycles and vehicle segments where BEVs will continue to struggle to deliver.
